LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams kicked off the outdoor season in grand fashion last weekend at the Dingels/Brueggen Open—and the Cardinals picked up right where they left off Saturday at the UW-La Crosse Ashton May Invitational.
For the second straight week,
Becca Dup stole the show for the Cardinals, as the sophomore broke—no, scratch that … shattered—a pair of school records to lead the charge. Dup won the triple jump with a leap of 11.70 meters, while placing fifth in the long jump with a jump of 5.49 meters.
Not to be outdone,
Jovan Newsum also came home with an event title, as the senior clocked a time of 15:21.04 to easily outrun the rest of the field.
Kyle Lichttenegger also enjoyed a banner afternoon in the long jump competition, recording a fifth-place finish of his own with a jump of 6.51 meters. The freshman also added a time of 11.22 in the 100.
Austin O'Hare and
Ross Kinderman also posted top-five finishes for the Cardinals—O'Hare stopped the clock in 9:39.04 to place third in the 3,000 steeplechase, and Kinderman uncorked a throw of 45.71 meters to place fourth in the javelin.
Desmond Steward chipped in a pair of seventh-place efforts in both the long jump (6.39m) and the triple jump (13.62m), while
Danielle Franke notched an eighth in the 5,000 (19:25.55),
Maria Missurelli finished eighth in pole vault (3.25m), and
Natalie King was 13
th in the hammer throw (43.05m)
The Cardinals hit the road next Saturday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., to take part in the Lee Krough Invitational, hosted by Gustavus.
