CHICAGO, Ill. — Overtimes have not been kind to the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team this season.
Less than a week after dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to St. Olaf, the Cardinals were forced to play not one—but two—extra 10-minute periods in their nonconference game against Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday evening.
And, unfortunately for coach
Corbin Bowers, the end result was the same, as the Scarlet Hawks netted the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime to hand the Cardinals a 2-1 setback.
After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals broke the ice in the 56
th minute, as
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) took a feed from
Chris Beiersdorf (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and beat IIT goalkeeper Alex Kern for his third goal of the season.
Saint Mary's would cling to that one-goal advantage until the 83
rd minute, when Brandon Bortei-Doku beat Cardinal keeper
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) to knot the game at 1-1—and send it into overtime.
Neither team could net the game-winner in OT No. 1, and it took nearly the entire 10 minutes of the second overtime, before Christopher Reed round the back of the net with 1:58 remaining to give the Scarlet Hawks the win.
Centeno finished with three saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Kern stopped seven of Saint Mary's eight shots on goal.
The Cardinals (4-4-0 overall) are back on the road on Friday, traveling to Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. MIAC matchup against the Auggies.
