WINONA, Minn. —
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) was a busy—and successful—individual Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinal sophomore collected wins in both singles and doubles in the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Bethel at the Winona Tennis Center.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were not able to give Sobczak much help, as the Royals won the seven matches he wasn't involved in in dealing the Cardinals a 7-2 setback.
"I thought we played well," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Bethel is a team that will be in the (MIAC) playoffs at seasons end—and we plan to be there with them.
"We still have some things to work on, but our overall performance was very good."
Sobczak teamed with
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) to outlast the Royals' Jack Bartels and Zeke Delain 9-7 at No. 2 doubles, while Bethel collected 8-2 and 8-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead into the singles portion of the match.
Sobczak did not waste any time collecting his singles win, rolling past Bartels 6-3, 6-1. Bethel responded with straight-set wins in four of the other five singles contests, with Alex Rudh (Hastings, Minn.) stretching his match at No. 5 to three sets, before falling 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 1-3 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, stepping out of conference play for an 11 a.m. matchup against Wartburg at the Winona Tennis Center.
