ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the second straight game, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team held the high-octane offense of league-leading Hamline to just a single goal through the game's opening period.
Â
That was the good news.
Â
The bad news?
Â
For the second straight game, the Pipers' offense came to life in a big way, erupting for four second-period goals and adding another in the third in rolling to a 6-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Cardinals at the Minnesota Wild TRIA Rink.
Â
The Pipers' Becca Zarembinski broke a scoreless deadlock with 43 seconds remaining in the game's opening period, beating Cardinal goalie
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) to give Hamline a 1-0 lead after the game's first 20 minutes—for the second straight game.
Â
And, just like Friday's first game of the teams' two-game series, the Pipers turned their offense up a notch in the middle frame.
Â
After netting three second-period goals in Friday's 4-2 win over the Cardinals at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena, the Pipers did that effort one better in Saturday's rematch, scoring four times in the game's second 20-minute period.
Â
Unlike the first period, when Hamline waited until the final 43 seconds to score, the Pipers scored 1:16 into the second period to make it 2-0. Leah Schwartzman, Bre Simon, and Zarembinski would all score in a four-minute span midway through the frame to push the Hamline advantage to 5-0.
Â
Madison Kolbow rounded out the scoring early in the third period, finding the back of the net at 3:13 for her seventh goal of the season.
Â
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) and
Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) accounted for nine of the Cardinals' 22 shots on goal—Henderson finished with five, one more than Hafiz.
Â
Ziakas finished with 22 saves in 33 minutes of work, before giving way to
Ashley Corcoran (Red Wing, Minn.), who played the final 27 minutes, allowing two goals on 17 shots. McKenna Hulslander, meanwhile, stopped all 22 shots in recording the shutout in goal for Hamline.
Â
The Cardinals (5-9-2 MIAC, 8-13-2 overall) close out the regular-season portion of their schedule next weekend with a pair of games against St. Olaf. Saint Mary's entertains the Oles in a 7 p.m. matchup Friday evening at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena, before heading to the Northfield Ice Arena in Northfield, Minn., for Saturday's 7 p.m. rematch.
