WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team gave Macalester all it could handle Saturday afternoon, but the Scots' depth just proved to be too much, as the Cardinals dropped a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I'm proud of the effort of our guys today," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The team showed great fight all day long."
The Cardinals picked up one of their two wins at No. 3 doubles, where
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) and
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) rallied from a 4-1 deficit to post an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.) would collect the Cardinals' lone singles wins, rattling off six unanswered points in the third-set superbreaker to beat Macalester's Ben White 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Alec Rudh (Hastings, Minn.) also went to a third set in his match at No. 5 singles, but did not have the same success as Tiedeman, falling 7-5, 5-7, 10-6.
The Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 2-4 overall) are right back in action Saturday night, squaring off against nationally ranked Gustavus in a 6 p.m. MIAC match at the Winona Tennis Center.
