WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team—coming off a thrilling 5-4 win over Macalester on Saturday—could not come up with win No. 2 on the weekend, as nationally ranked Gustavus dealt the Cardinals a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I was very happy with the way we played," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The effort was certainly there—but Gustavus is nationally ranked for a reason. They are very good, and they proved that today."
Gustavus opened by sandwiching 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles around an 8-3 victory at No. 2, before closing out the sweep with six straight-set singles wins—dropping no more than three games in any of the 12 sets.
The Cardinals (1-3 MIAC, 3-5 overall) step out of conference play next Friday, traveling to Madison, Wis., for a 4:30 p.m. showdown against Edgewood.
