ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team kicked off its spring trip in eerily similar fashion to its female counterparts Tuesday evening.
Â
While the Cardinal women were dropping a 6-3 decision to Hanover in its spring trip opener, the Saint Mary's men found themselves in the same predicament, also falling to the Panthers by a 6-3 count.
Â
"It was two tough losses tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Hanover is a very good team, and we battled them from start to finish—we were close, just didn't have enough."
Â
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and
Bobby Tiedemann (Euclid, Minn.) teamed for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, but
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Mihn.)/Alex Hom (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.)/
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) weren't as fortunate, falling 8-5 and 8-2 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Â
Tiedemann and Holm chipped in straight-set singles wins—Tiedemann's aa 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 and Holm's a 6-1, 7-6 (1) triumph at No. 6.
Â
The Cardinals (3-6 overall) are right back in action Wednesday morning, squaring off against Adrian in a 10 a.m. (EST) nonconference match at the USTA National Training Center in Orlando, Fla.
