DECORAH, Iowa — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field coach
Niels Anderson had more than his fair share of stellar outings during his collegiate days at Luther.
And his Cardinal track and field teams seem to be following in his footsteps when it comes to competing at Luther.
The Cardinals did their head coach proud Saturday afternoon, putting together numerous outstanding performances during the Luther Alumni Duel.
Becca Dup (Albert Lea, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals in the non-team-scored event, smashing the Saint Mary's triple jump record, placing first place in the event with her jump of 11.74 meters—not only putting her atop the Cardinal record books, but also fourth in the nation.
Dup also managed to take first in the long jump (5.40m) and in the 55 meter dash (7.57), and also joined
Alicia Berkenes (Buffalo, Minn.),Carley Cronen (Kandiyohi, Minn.), and Marissa Carlyle (San Jose, Calif.) to finish second in the 4x400 meter relay (1:56.47).
The Cardinals' 4x200 relay team of Carlyle, Alexis Floresca (Romeoville, Ill.),
Portia Mensah (Bloomington, Minn.), and
Mackenzie Ellefson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) also collected a first-place showing, stopping the clock in 1:56.47.
Other notable performances for the women's' team included: Kayla Boettcher (Colfax, Wis.), who finished first in pole vault (2.75m);
Natalie King (Houston, Minn.), who finished first in the weight throw (15.02m), and
Bailey Joens (Osage, Iowa), who took fourth in the shot put (8.97m). The Cardinal women excelled in the 55, finishing with four of the top five spots in the event.
On the men's side,
Connor Nicholas (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the charge for the throwers, taking third in the weight throw (13.68m) and seventh in the shot put (9.92m).
Tyler Amy (Chatfield, Minn.) finished fourth in shot put (11.14m) and fifth in weight throw (12.32m), while Eric Ohde (Chetek, Wis.) took fourth in the weight throw (12.45m).
Kody Michaels (Stoddard, Wis.) led the way in the men's running events, finishing first in the 55 meter hurdles (8.12m) and in the 4x400 meter relay (3:36.29), where he was joined by Andrew Allemann (Cochrane, Wis.), Matthew Boone (Mindoro, Wis.), and Jon Meaden (Rosemount, Min.). Boone finished second in the 55 (6.88), and Allemann finished fourth in the 400 (54.47).
While the rest of the Cardinals were in Decorah, Iowa,
Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.) and
Austin O'Hare (Rushford, Minn.) competed at Minnesota State-Mankato, where they placed third place in the 800 (1:57.67) and sixth in the mile (4:22.32), respectively.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, heading to Schoenecker Arena on the St. Thomas campus in St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the St. Thomas Showcase.
