DULUTH, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota—coming off a 6-3 loss to St. Scholastica in which all three doubles matches were decided by 8-6 scores and three of the six singles matches went to a third set—returned to the Arrowhead Tennis Center Saturday evening for a nonconference matchup against NCAA Division II UM-Duluth.
And unfortunately for the Cardinals, the return trip to Arrowhead T.C. did not prove any more favorable.
The Cardinals grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but the Bulldogs rattled off wins in four of the six singles matches—including a pair of three-setters—to deal Saint Mary's a 5-4 nonconference setback.
"It was an excellent match against a big Division II opponent," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We just ran a little low on gas."
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) teamed up for their second No. 1 doubles win in as many matches Saturday, posting an 8-2 win against the Bulldogs.
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) and
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) added an 8-5 victory at No. 3 to give Saint Mary's the early 2-1 lead.
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Lois picked up straight-set singles wins for the Cardinals, while Sonday and Kinzer each won their first set at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, only to drop the second and third.
The Cardinals (1-3 overall) are back in action on Sunday morning, traveling to Superior, Wis., for a 9 a.m. nonconference game against UW-Superior.
