SUPERIOR, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team closed out a busy nonconference weekend in impressive fashion Sunday morning, as the Cardinals cruised to an 8-1 victory over UW-Superior at the UW-Superior Fieldhouse.
Saint Mary's, coming off 6-3 and 5-4 losses to St. Scholastica and UM-Duluth, respectively, on Saturday, left little doubt against the Yellowjackets, opening with wins in two of the three doubles matches, before dropping just 15 games in posting six straight-set singles wins.
"It was a solid win," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The ladies played well from top-to-bottom."
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.)/
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.)/
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn. ) chipped in an 8-5 win at No. 2 to give Saint Mary's an early 2-1 lead.
And the Cardinals weren't finished, as Sonday, Barr, Lois, Boeve,
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) and
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) closed out the win with straight-set singles wins.
The Cardinals (2-3 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Saturday, hosting Bethel in a noon matchup at the Winona Tennis Center.
