WINONA, Minn. — With temperatures hovering in the low 40s, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams probably wished Thursday's Dingels/Brueggen Invitational was being held inside the Gostomski Fieldhouse, rather than outside at the Saint Mary's Track and Field Complex.
Or perhaps back in San Diego, Calif.—where the Cardinals kicked off the outdoor season last weekend.
Despite running up against 15 other teams—including NCAA Division II Minnesota State-Mankato, St. Cloud State, and Upper Iowa—the Cardinals performed exceptionally well, posting numerous top 10 finishes for both the men and women.
Natalie King (Houston, Minn.) earned the highest placement for Saint Mary's, taking second in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.03 meters, while
Alexis Floresca (Romeoville, Ill.) ran the fourth-fastest women's 100 meter dash in school history, taking eighth with a time of 12.70.
Other notable performances for the women included
Hannah Crowe (Baraboo, Wis.) in the 400 hurdles (10
th, 1:09.42 / another fourth-fastest all-time),
Rachel Ohde (Chetek, Wis. / 1.53m) and Rachel Kedl (Lamberton, Minn. / 1.43m) in the high jump, and
Maddie Bollig (St. Croix Falls, Wis. / 11
th, 2:49.83) in the 800. In the women's 1,500,
Danielle Franke (Mounds View, Minn.) and
Alicia Berkenes (Buffalo, Minn.) finished in 12th (5:14.37) and 13th (5:19.73), respectively, while
Kayla Boettcher (Colfax, Wis.) earned 11th in the pole vault (2.45m).
On the men's side, David Kemper (Woodbury, Minn.) took third in the pole vault (4.35m), while the 4x100 relay team of Andrew Allemann (Cochrane, Wis.), Noah Anderson, Matthew Boone (Mindoro, Wis.), and Melic Thomas (St. Peter, Minn.) finished third with a time of 44.44—third-fastest in program history.
Other top 10 performances included the men's 4x400 relay team—Boone, Allemann, Nathan Hoglund (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), and Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.)—finishing fourth, while Ben Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) took fourth in the 1500 meter run (4:14.96) and Noah Anderson finished fourth in the 200 (23.02).
Isaiah Olsem (Fulda, Minn.) and Krogman chipped in fifth-place finishes in the 3,000 (9:28.55) and 400 (50.48), while Ross Kinderman took sixth in the javelin (40.82m), Christian Beamer (Two Harbors, Minn.) placed sixth in the high jump (1.74m), Ryan Buchmeier (Woodbury, Minn.) posted a seventh in the triple jump (11.37m), Jonathon Meaden (Rosemount, Minn.) finished seventh in the 800 (2:05.38), and Connor Nicholas (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned ninth in the hammer throw (43.84m).
The Cardinals are looking forward to more competition—and, hopefully, warmer weather—next Saturday, as they travel to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Ashton May Invitational.
