AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota baseball team made the final game of their 10-game spring trip—and their first-ever meeting with Penn State-Brandywine—a memorable one Sunday morning.
Â
Memorable for the Cardinals—but not for the Lions—as Saint Mary's erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning in cruising to a 16-1 nonconference victory over Penn State-Brandywine.
Â
The Cardinals, who snapped a three-game losing steak with the trip-ending win, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second—getting RBI singles from
Dixon Irwin (Red Wing, Minn.),
Joe Seegers (Oconomowoc, Wis.), and
Alex Kleve (Roseville, Minn.)—before adding three more runs in the third.
Â
Jake Barry (Tinley Park, Ill.) highlighted the Cardinals' second straight three-run inning, delivering a two-run single, while Seegers' sacrifice fly drove in the other run.
Â
Penn State-Brandywine plated its lone run in the bottom of the third to make it 6-1.
And then came the fourth inning.
Â
Saint Mary's sent 15 batters to the plate, banging out six hits—including a three-run, pinch-hit triple from Connor Cornell (Plymouth, Minn.)—to put the game out of reach.
Â
The Cardinals battered a pair of Lions' pitchers for 16 runs on 19 hits.
Will Matthews (Geneva, Ill.) led the Saint Mary's hit parade, going 3-for-3 with three runs scores, while Irwin, Seegers,
Dirk Drohner (Plover, Wis.), and Tommy Hill (Madison, Wis.) all chipped in two hits, and Seegers and Cornell posted three RBIs.
Â
Dom Lonetti (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Jonathan Cieminski. Cieminski (Fountain City, Wis.) went the first three innings, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts, while Lonetti tossed two innings of two-hit shutout ball, before giving way to
Jack Nelson (Portage, Wis.), who was perfect in his two innings of work. Â
