WINONA, Minn. — St. Thomas went deep — again, and again, and again, and again, and again — in running its record to a perfect 16-0 in Minnesota Intercollegaite Athletic Conference Tournament play Friday afternoon, as the Tommies outslugged Hamline 7-4 in the first of two opening round games at Winona Cotter Field.

The Tommies, who improved to 37-4 overall, will square off against Gustavus — 5-1 winners over Bethel in its opening-round game at Saint Mary’s University — in a winner’s bracket game at 5:15 on Friday at Saint Mary’s University, while Hamline, which dropped to 27-9, will face Bethel in an elimination game, also at 5:15 at Winona Cotter Field.

The Tommies surrendered a first-inning run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Hamline’s Grace Weinreich (Wahkton, Minn.), but answered with three runs in the bottom of the first — the first on an RBI single by Allison Wright (Pewaukee, Wis.) and the other two on the first of UST’s five home runs, this one a two-run shot off the bat of Morgan Betker (Bettendorf, Iowa).

Hamline would close the gap to 3-2 on a one-out home run by Weinreich in the top of the third, but UST rattled off single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings — on solo home runs by Kaitlyn Wrightman (Forest Lake, Minn.), Colleen OwenLakeville, Minn.), Wright and Sydney Marquardt (Regina, Sask.) — to seall the victory.

Wrightman, Missy Bruggeman (Greenbush, Minn.) and Wright — UST’s top three hitters in the batting order — all had two hits to lead UST’s 10-hit attack, while Sophie Davidson (St. Paul, Minn.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Weinreich was 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Pipers.
