St. Thomas-Gustavus Box Score
WINONA, Minn. — St. Thomas scored early and never looked back Friday evening, as the Tommies scored two runs in the first inning and rolled to a 4-1 victory over Gustavus in the winner’s bracket game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at Saint Mary’s University.
With the win, the Tommies — who improved to 17-0 all-time in conference tournament action — will face the winner of Saturday’s 11 a.m. Gustavus-Hamline elimination game for the tournament title Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the SMU Field.
A UST win would give the Tommies their sixth straight conference tournament title, while a loss would set up an if-necessary rematch at 4 p.m.
UST, which belted out five home runs in beating Hamline 7-4 in their first game of the day at Winona Cotter Field, used an RBI single by Steph Moores (Big Lake, Minn.) and a bases-loaded hit batter to score its two first-inning runs.
Gustavus cut the gap in half with a Rachael Click (Rochester, Minn.) solo home run in the fourth, but UST answered with a solo home run of its own in the fifth — on a Moores home run — then iced the victory with another run in the top of the seventh.
Missy Bruggeman (Greenbush, Minn.) went 3-for-4 and Moores was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Tommies, while UST pitcher Marta Radcliffe (Lakeville, Minn.) limited GAC to three hits, while striking out six and walking one.
